With all the wonderful music of all types in the world, why spend ten weeks on only one musical creator? And why Beethoven? Haven’t we heard him enough? American composer John Cage once wrote that after he got rid of his preconceptions about Beethoven, he found his music constantly surprising. Brookfield composer and course instructor Erik Nielsen has had the same experience. The way in which Beethoven fearlessly explored beyond the accepted limits of music throughout his life was an inspiration to composers who followed him throughout the 19th century. Even now his music stands out as being fresh, original, and powerful. With 10 weeks we can explore the gold mine of creativity from the early chamber music through Beethoven’s powerful middle period to his late transcendent masterpieces. It ought to be an exciting course!

Cady’s Falls Nursery was for many years known as a source of esoteric, garden-worthy plants
for serious gardeners throughout the Northeast. Although they are no longer selling plants, the
gardens are open to the public. T
hey have been avidly collecting and propagating plants for over
forty years and their horticultural and botanical collections include some 1400 species and
cultivars from around the world, grown in a wide range of habitats and ecological niches. Their
gardens contain many unusual North American natives including arctic alpines, cacti, pitcher
plants, skunk cabbages, ladyslippers, trilliums, serpentine ferns, climbing fern, dwarf conifers
and many others. We’ll have a picnic on their wide lawn and after lunch we’ll have to opportunity to meander through the paths and admire their perennials.
