Wrapping Boxes for Seniors

Another holiday tradition! Westview residents will be gathering to shop for donations for Shoeboxes for Seniors, a program put on by the Montpelier Senior Activity Center. This program allows for seniors lacking necessary resources to receive some great gifts. Our residents gather together their donations, and help to pack and wrap giftboxes for seniors in need. Join Westview Residents as they attend a wonderful performance at the Barre Opera House. The Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus will perform Handel’s Messiah with Lisa Jablow conducting.  The soloists will be Helen Lyons (soprano), Andrew Darling (countertenor), George Johnson III (tenor) and Tim Wilfong (baritone).  This is a beautiful performance.

Sea Turtles play several critical roles in our lives. Sea turtles help to maintain the balance of our ecological systems, keeping the ocean a safe space for all of us to swim, fish and do other recreational activities. “For the past 15 years, Javier Mayo Huerta and Lucy Carmona Liborio have been working to protect sea turtles on the Pacific coast of their native Mexico. Patrolling a 13-mile stretch of beach at night, they ward off poachers who dig up turtle eggs for sale on the black market, transport the eggs to a protected enclosure by their beachside home, safeguard the eggs until they hatch, and then escort the babies to the ocean where they will do their best to survive. Middlesex freelance photographer Elliot Burg has documented Javier and Lucy’s extraordinary work and looks forward to sharing his images and experience in this evening travelogue and slideshow.” Please join us for this fun event! Many of us have been touched by dementia in our lives. Some of us may even have dementia, so what does this mean for us? How can we adapt to the changes that go on in our lives? Please join us on this fantastic discussion surrounding dementia, its symptoms and coping mechanisms for ourselves and our loved ones living with dementia. Did you know that there are over 11,000 Vermonters living with Alzheimer’s disease?  This will be an opportunity to learn about the different types of aging, different types of Dementia; and to learn how you can best support someone you love who might be beginning to show signs of Dementia.  This lecture will be presented by a Teepa Snow certified, Dementia Care Trainer, using the “Positive Approach to Care” model. The typical format of the meeting is: a group check-in, some announcements and then a break-down into two groups: people with Parkinson’s and then their friends, partners, etc. This is a great way to learn more about coping with Parkinson’s and voicing one’s experiences with Parkinson’s. We will host a ceremony honoring our veterans. Please join us as we thank them for their service and hear from them and learn about their experiences.
