Did you ever wonder what it would be like to serve in the Peace Corps as an older volunteer? The majority of Peace Corps volunteers are straight out of college, but there are a growing number of over-60 volunteers, and there is no upper age limit. The oldest serving volunteer is over 80! Steve and Heather Bailey started their Peace Corps service in 2012 at the ages of 61 and 63. They will be sharing their experience of living and working in a small village in the mountains of Panama with Westview. Please join us for this fascinating lecture!
Many people know E. B. White only for his remarkable children’s books, but are unaware of the multitude of publications E.B White has beyond their favorite childhood novels. Some followers of the writing guide, “Elements of Style” have yet to connect the “White” of “Strunk and White” to this famous author. Many readers do not know that E.B. White wrote for New Yorker magazine for almost 60 years, and from 1927 to 1957, with a few breaks, he was the primary editorial voice on its “Notes and Comment” opening page. He covered several subjects from politics, to World War II, world government, the environment, the 1st amendment, blacklisting, and the arts. He reviewed fellow writers and poked fun at “celebrities” of all sorts. He also wrote columns for other magazines, an introduction to “A Basic Chicken Guide for the Small Flock Owner” for the Department of Agriculture and contributed to a pamphlet called Four Freedoms at the request of FDR. Many do not know his eclectic background of works.
E. B. White’s bibliographer and fan, Kathy Hall, would like to open your eyes to these treasures and more, so you can continue to enjoy his lucid and tender prose with an even more in depth knowledge of his life and works. To learn about EBW’s many books, join fellow friends of Wilbur at Westview Meadows on Friday, May 10 at 3:00 in the Main Dining Room.
